OOG container freight is priced on the space your cargo blocks, not just the space it occupies.
When a load extends beyond the container footprint, adjacent deck positions may need to stay vacant for safety and lashing access. These are called lost slots. Carriers charge for them separately.
A unit that exceeds container width by a modest margin can trigger a lost-slot surcharge that meaningfully exceeds the base freight cost. It is one of the most consistently overlooked costs in OOG shipping.
