One hundred reinforced caissons. Six kilometres long. Foundations at 50 metres below the surface. Europe's deepest offshore breakwater is under construction.
Each caisson at the New Genoa Breakwater measures up to 33.7 metres high, 30 metres wide and 66.8 metres long, being positioned with precision on a tight offshore schedule. Once complete, the structure will replace a breakwater originally built in the 1920s and enable the Port of Genoa to accommodate the ultra-large vessels that modern global shipping demands.
