Acadia, the first US-flagged, Jones Act-compliant subsea rock installation vessel, has begun sea trials.
The vessel is capable of transporting and installing up to 20,000 metric tonnes of rock on the seabed, used as critical scour protection for subsea infrastructure such as power transmission cables, telecommunications cables, oil and gas pipelines, and offshore wind turbine foundations.
Installation vessels only perform when the supply chain behind them works flawlessly. Transition pieces that must clear customs without delays. Substation components requiring permits secured months in advance.
When an installation vessel sits idle waiting for delayed cargo, day rates run into six figures.
